Try turmeric for supple skin
While you might not think beyond sprinkling a little in a glass of warm milk to battle a cold, there's much more to the innocuous turmeric than that. Indians have been using turmeric to beautify themselves since ages now. Here are just some reasons why you should be using turmeric as well:
If you have an uneven skin tone and would do anything to get that perfect peaches and creamcomplexion, then turmeric's what you need. Turmeric evens out the skin tone by reducing the traces of pigmentation. Mix a little turmeric powder alongwith cucumber juice or lemon juice and apply on skin. Wash it off after 15 minutes. But remember to do this everyday to notice a significant change in your skin colour.
Turmeric makes for an awesome body scrub. This is why most Indian brides used to smear a paste of turmeric and besan on their bodies before their wedding to get skin that is super smooth, baby soft and glowing.
Application of turmeric and a little milk cream also makes the skin supple and improves its elasticity.

Women ditch salons, colour hair at home
The study, commissioned by the Scott Cornwall Colour Restore Hair Infusions Range, found that 76 percent of women notice their hair colour fade within four weeks, yet the majority only visit the hairdressers every three or four months.
"I'm not surprised that so many women are now deciding to colour their hair at home, instead of going to a salon. It's the easier, more affordable option that allows greater freedom of choice,"femalefirst.co.uk quoted hair and colour expert Scott Cornwall as saying.
Interestingly, the study also indicates that 59 percent of women who dye their hair at home, are aged between 30 and 50. While they may have a higher disposable income, this group appears to be more confident at dyeing their hair themselves compared to women aged 30 and under.

Is it normal for older women to lose hair?
One of the most emotionally devastating concerns for women is thinning hair and hair loss. We understand that a woman's head of hair is her crowning glory — and losing too much hair can be a serious and frightening blow to her self-esteem, but you also need to understand that losing hair with age is perfectly normal.
Causes of hair loss in older women
Many factors can cause hair loss in older women, including hormonal changes and vitamin deficiencies. Hair loss can be troublesome both mentally and physically, but there are things you can do to strengthen your hair and its follicles.
Hormonal causes
A serious change in hormones due to pregnancy or menopause can cause the hair to enter a resting phase. Hair still breaks and falls out, but the growth is slowed down, resulting in thinning hair.
Seasonality
You'll lose the most hair in the fall -- typically November and December when hair reaches maturity in its growth cycle.
Illness or intense stress
Sometimes hair loss occurs as a result of illness. Stress, excessive weight loss, iron deficiency and thyroid problems can also cause hair loss.
Diet
After many years of crash dieting and malnutrition, women can experience hair loss due to a lack of vitamins in their system.
Chemical treatment
After years of dyeing and chemically treating hair, the follicles grow weak and thin. This can lead to hair loss.
Blow outs and flat irons
Blowing out your hair or using a flat iron can severely damage your hair. The heat from the flat iron damages your hair's natural strength and excessive brushing can weaken the follicles.
Avoiding hair loss
Taking vitamins and iron supplements can strengthen your hair, and changing your diet can help too. Towel dry your hair naturally as it can give your hair a chance to recover from the heat and pulling caused by blowouts.

Tips for monsoon hair care
1. Use the right comb to untangle your hair - wide toothed combs with less static.
2. To avoid breakage, comb your hair at the bottom and then start combing from the roots.
3. Make sure your hair is fully wet before you apply shampoo and use warm water for this.
4. Like your skin, your hair also needs hydration. Drink plenty of water.
5. Eat a balanced protein rich diet, along with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
6. Condition your hair and leave it on for few minutes for deep conditioning.
For frizzy hair: Some of us might face frizziness during monsoons, use cream based shampoos and conditioners. Frizzled hair is an outcome of raise cuticle. Use a mild shampoo and a light weight leave in conditioner to lock moisture. Use hair masks for Dry and frizzy hair to get that extra moisture to last good 1-2 months.
For dull hair: You can oil your hair once in 15 days in monsoons. Leave it on for 1 hour and then shampoo and condition. Treat your hair with hair spas once a month, enriched with protein that will lock moisture levels and close the cuticles.
For flat hair: Use volume boost shampoos and conditioners to give your hair that extra volume look. This is a common problem during monsoons for oily or thin hair.
For oily hair/scalp: Use a light weight shampoo and conditioner, preferably gel based products that do not leave your hair feeling oily or sticky. Wash your hair regularly to get rid of excess oil and dirt. Oily hair tends to become limp during monsoons and required shampoo that will give volume to the hair.
To treat hair-fall: Hair fall increases during monsoons but this is a temporary phase. Use specific shampoos and conditioners for anti - hair fall/breakage. Also, indulge in hair masks and spas, specially designed for hair fall. This will strengthen your hair from the roots as well as the length.
To treat dandruff: Humidity leads to itchy flaky scalp in monsoons. One may have a healthy scalp throughout the year, but during monsoons are struck by dandruff menace. Use an effective anti-dandruff shampoo. Cut down on styling and styling products, that further aggravates the problem by attracting dirt and grime.

Treating fine lines and wrinkles
Over time, it tends to get more visible. Wrinklesdefinitely alter the way you look; and this may change the way you feel about yourself.
Wrinkles usually start as fine lines. They tend to get deeper with time. Since they are noticeable on your face, you need to treat it immediately.
There is no way you can prevent fine lines or wrinkles but you can definitely treat them.
Ways to treat:
-Skin creams or gels which contain retinoids - a type of vitamin A, help treat fine lines and wrinkles.
-Consult your dermatologist before choosing a retinoid cream for yourself because they contain prescription drugs like tazarotene and tretinoin.
-You can also opt for salon treatments for wrinkles. Chemical peels, laser treatments and radio frequency (RF) treatments are also some other options to treat fine lines and wrinkles.
-Alpha hydroxyl acids, beta hydroxyl acids and poly hydroxy acids derived from sugar containing fruits. These acids are exfoliants that help remove the upper layer of old, dead skin and stimulate the growth of smooth, evenly pigmented new skin. These acids increases your susceptibility to sun damage, thus always wear a sunscreen during use and for at least one week afterward.

How to get your make-up right in monsoon
Imagine what could happen: patchy make-up, bleeding lipstick and mascara streaking down your face. Oh no! You don't want to end up with that washed-out look.
Even when it is not pouring, the high humidity levels can make your make-up melt. Either way, you need to build your defenses. A bit of caution and some common make-up sense can help you look great even if you are caught in a downpour.
Makeup expert Ritu Kolentine of Cleopatra Spa and Salon tell us how to get it right.
Foundation
The best thing to do this season would be to go for the minimalist look. If you love make-up, stick with water-resistant foundation. However, use it as sparingly as possible.
If you are indoors and fear humidity rather than a downpour then layer your make-up to make it waterproof. Apply your foundation and then use powder to pack it in.
Avoid using thick, creamy concealers. They may bleed and run—stick to matt ones instead.
For dry skin the best thing to use is a light-tinted moisturiser with an SPF.
Eyes
No kajal, please! Put all your kohl sticks away for the time being as kajal will bleed and create faux dark circles under your eyes. To get your eye make-up right this season use a primer or gel-based product. Go for gel-based or water-resistant eyeliners. Use them to support the lash line rather than applying them thick.
Transparent mascaras, such as clear mascara are great for daily wear and will shape your lashes beautifully without streaking your face. For more definition though, you could use black waterproof mascara which are readily available. You should avoid using mascara on the lower lashes.
Lips
Line your lips with a nude colour pencil and fill in. You may go over it with the tones you are wearing. Fill in using a long-lasting lipstick. If you find this too dry, top it up with a clear gloss. It is worth a note that bright lip colours are in. However, if you are not comfortable wearing them, tone them down by adding a bit of foundation.

"Using a face wipe is a great way to make sure you cleanse and tone, removing makeup at the same time to ensure your pores aren't blocked,"femalefirst.co.uk quoted facialist Teresa Tarmey as saying.
She also said that wiping haphazardly before going to bed can removie makeup, but learning how to wipe without stretching your skin and minimising pressure will reduce any damaging effects.
"Skin is the foundation for looking beautiful, so taking care of it is crucial. Removing makeup in the wrong way can not only irritate the skin but promote premature aging, causing fine lines and uneven complexion," said Tarmey.
Follow the following makeup removing steps shared by Tarmey:
Gently remove makeup from your forehead first. Wipe it from the middle of the forehead to the left, then back to the middle and to the right.
Then move on to your eyes. Wrap the wipe around your finger, exposing the other side and gently sweep it across the lids towards the outer corners. Use your ring finger for this to avoid applying more pressure on your delicate skin.
For your cheeks, repeatedly sweep the wipe upwards towards your ears. The upward movement will not cause skin to sag.

Get a clay mask for glowing skin
Cleopatra loved them, so did Queen Nefertiti and it's no secret that a clay mask can be a great one of the best pick-me-ups for the skin. Considered an important medicinal and cosmetic tool, clay, is now becoming increasingly popular as a rediscovered treatment for several skincare conditions. Says Dr Rashmi Shetty, "Good cosmetic clays conditions and nourishes your skin by removing the dead cells and extracting the extra oils and impurities from the surface of the skin. One should apply clay a mask regularly as it can impart a natural glow to your face."
And there's a mask for every skin — from one for anti-ageing, to dealing with dryness, treating pimples and controlling acne, cleansing and firming the skin.
Kinds of clay
Owing to their mineral content, clay comes in a variety of colours. They also differ in texture and have diffferent properties. Bentonite clay (also called fuller's clay) are the most useful of all clays. It has absorbing properties and can be used as an exfoliant as it draws out impurities from the skin.
Others, such as French Green clay and Rhassoul clay, absorb excess sebum and are apt for oily skin. They contain magnesium oxide that cleanses the skin and absorbs the fat from it.
Red clay is a powerhouse iron oxides, that brighten the skin and renew cells. Adds Dr Shetty, "The essential nutrients contained in the clay gives a toning effect on the skin. Fuller's earth clay is sedimentary clay is a bleaching agent and is used as a skin lightening agent. French Green Clay has excellent absorbing agents as it absorbs the extra oil from the skin, which is good as this extra oil may lead to acne marks and blemishes."
Where to apply, how often
Don't slather on the clay everywhere, restrict it to the regions of the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin and away from eyes and lips. How often can one use a clay mask? Says consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist, Dr Bindu Sthalekar, "People having oily skin can use clay masks for 2-4 days in a week or so. One can wash the mask with plain water."
Can it irritate the face?
No, clay mask does not cause any type of skin problems, says Dr Sthalekar. "They are actually used to cure acne. Use a clay mask with plain water. If clay masks are used with milk it may lead to skin problems. Also, the texture of the clay mask is impervious and if a person rubs it too much into the skin, it can lead to redness."
Masks for men too?
Of course, says spa expert Pawlomi Dhawan. "Men want ways to control excess skin oil and unclog the pores. The two main properties of a clay mask are deep cleansing and detoxifying and thus they are beneficial to men and women too. In fact, so many male clientele ask for clay-based packs and foot massage regimes." Men can apply a clay mask once a week, after shaving and before toning the skin.
Things to add to the clay mask
Quite a few ingredients can make their way into your mask. They are:
- Oats
- Buttermilk and cold milk
- Honey
- Essential oils
- Orange peel
- Herbs like chamomile and lavender
Home remedies
A good clay mask is easily made at home. You can store it in a jar or give it to someone as a gift:
For all skin types:
This is a skin soothing mask.
Ingredients:
White clay — 1/2 cup
Oats, grounded — 2 tbsp
Milk or buttermilk powder — 1 tbsp
Honey — 1 1/2 tsp
Method:
To apply, mix two teaspoons with an equal amount of water or any other liquid (milk, herb tea, or aloe vera juice). Spread evenly over your face. Leave on for about 10 minutes. Gently remove with warm water and a washcloth. Apply a homemade moisturiser. Mix and store in a covered jar or bag in your bathroom.
For normal skin:
People with normal skin can combine fuller's earth with Vitamin E oil and apply it on the skin.
For oily skin:
Combine combine fuller's earth with calamine lotion and apply it all over the face and neck. Can also use this on the back.
For acne prone skin:
Acne-prone skin needs more attention, here's a mask that will help keep it clean.
Combine green clay (it's great for drawing out impurities) and about three tablespoons of aloe vera gel in a bowl. Add some orange peel to this as well as an essential oil (can use lavender or tea tree varieties) that suits your skin. Spread over the face and neck avoiding the eye area. Keep it on for 15 minutes, rinse and dry the face.
For a glow:
Mix a little clay and water and add a few drops of essential oil to this (use rosemary for oily skin). Clean the face first, then leave this mask on the face for five minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water. You can also add this mix to your bathtub.
Watch out!
- Some masks, such as the sulfur ones, tend to backfire on you when you leave them on too long or apply them on spots where they aren't supposed to go. In doing so, they dry out your skin too much at a time, leaving redness or irritation and dry skin flakes.
- People with dry skin should not use clay masks as they have drying agents.

Bad hair days connected to confidence?
The study, conducted by budget hotel chainTravelodge, surveyed 2,000 women to investigate how their tresses affect their mood when they wake up in the morning. Findings showed that eight out of 10 women believe their glory, self-worth and beauty lies in their hair, reportsfemalefirst.co.uk.
However, on an average, women wake up with unruly hair at least three times every week. This means that the average British female will have 7,332 bad hair days in a lifetime -- equivalent to 20 years of her life suffering from bad hair.
This results in mood swings and leads to their feeling depressed for at least four hours and 26 minutes during the day, and also reduces their confidence.
"Women feel like entirely different individuals when their hair does not behave. Having unmanageable tresses can make a woman feel tired, grumpy and less confident. In contrast, a great hair day will make a woman feel sexy, confident and ready to take on the world," said Shakila Ahmed, spokeswoman of Travelodge.

I don't believe in natural look: Sofia Vergara
The " Modern Family" star also said that she always advises her American friends to wear makeup.
"I'm Latin. I get glammed up no matter what. It's automatic. I shower, do hair and makeup. For me, it's like shaving. I don't believe in a natural look. Lipstick brightens your face," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Vergara as saying.
"Unless you're Gisele Bundchen or 19, you need something. Most of my girlfriends are very good with it because they're Latin, but some of the Americans, I give them lipstick like 'put it on'," she said.
The 41-year-old also admits that she is comfortable with her body and wears what suits her.
"People say, 'Oh you always wear the same type of dress on the red carpet'. Of course. I'm not 20 years old. I know exactly what looks good on me now," she added.

Skincare in monsoon
Pollution, dirt, grime and the harmful UV rays of the sun are the main reasons why your skin is prone to damage during the rainy season. Besides this, the risk of fungal infection increases due to accumulation of sweat and dirt on the skin. Moreover, many mistake Monsoon as a season to skip sunscreen. However, this is wrong because the UVA & UVB rays which can cause tanning and skin damage can penetrate through the clouds. always pick a sunscreen that provides protection from both UVA & UVB sun rays with SPF 30 or more.
It is equally important to take care of your skin during the rains like you do in every season. Fight off the monsoon skin woes with a healthy and balanced skincare regimen that helps keep your skin nourished and glowing. Here is how you can do that...
Dry skin
During monsoon, people with dry skin may experience an increase in dryness of skin because wetting in the rains have a dehydrating effect on the skin. Dehydration is also caused due to the lack of skin repairing vitamins.
Take care - Keep your face clean with soap free face cleanser as it doesn't dry out the skin and keeps if supple. What better way than to tone your skin with natural ingredients. Make your own skin toner by adding a few drops of honey to 2 tablespoons of milk. It not only tones but hydrates the skin as well. Pick a light weight sunscreen with SPF 30 for dry skin that protects and hydrates the skin.
Try this - The crunchy seeds of Pomegranate are loaded with anti-aging compounds, like antioxidants and vitamin C, and provide great nourishment for dry skin. In a food processor, combine 2 tablespoons of pomegranate seeds and 1 cup uncooked oatmeal. Pour it in a bowl; stir in 2 tablespoons honey and 2 tablespoons buttermilk. Apply to face for a few minutes, then rinse. It helps remove dead skin cells for smooth, soft skin.
Recommended facial - Chocolate facial
Tip - You cannot see the sun due to the clouds but it doesn't mean you don't need sun protection. Never leave home without applying sun block.
Oily skin
Monsoon brings a host of skin problems for oily skin. It makes the sebaceous glands, which are responsible for oil secretion, hyperactive. The oil secretion and sweat are deposited on the skin and trap dirt and bacteria, giving rise to blackheads, whiteheads, breakouts and sometimes painful pimples.
Take care - An oil-controlling deep cleanser that cleans the pores and controls the oil secretion is good for oily skin. Use an alcohol- free toner to retain pH balance of the skin. For sun protection, pick a gel-based sunscreen with SPF 30 that adds moisture but isn't too creamy for the skin.
Try this - Take 2 tablespoons Papaya pulp, 1 tablespoons curd, an ounce of aloe vera gel and mix it. Now add a few drops of lavender oil to this mixture. Papaya works as a great de-tanner; curd clears blemishes; aloe vera soothes the skin; and lavender boosts rejuvenation.
Recommended facial - Aloe vera facial
Tip - If you spot an unwanted zit, apply toothpaste on it and let it dry overnight. It kills the bacteria, dries out the puss and takes away the inflation.
Combination skin
This type of skin is characterized with the T-zone as oily and the cheeks are usually normal or dry in condition. During the rainy season, due to excessive humidity the T-zone becomes oilier, shinier and attracts dirt. This can sometime leads to unwanted breakouts.
Take care - Anti-bacterial cleanser is perfect for this skin type. For toning, use cool water with two drops of lemon juice. Lemon is not only refreshing but also acts as deep cleanser, giving you a squeaky clean feel after every wash. Before stepping out, apply a hydrating sunscreen with SPF 30 as the skin loses moisture due to sweating. Monsoon also aggravates the problem of dandruff, which can further lead to hair fall, breakouts or acne outburst. So it's equally important to keep your mane squeaky clean and protected as well.
Try this - A strawberry face mask is a straight answer to all your skin woes. With a blender, blend 1/2 cup frozen or fresh strawberries and mix it with 1 cup yogurt, and 1 1/2 tablespoons honey. Regularly apply it on face for a soft, supple and smooth skin.
Recommended facial - Fruit facial with milk
Tip - Always keep a blotting paper handy to wipe the oil off the T-zone. You can also rub ice on it to minimize the pores and decrease the secretion of sebum.
Normal skin
Although there are no major problems that a normal skin faces, you still need to be cautious of greasiness, dust and dirt.
Take care - Clean your face at least twice a day with non-soapy anti-bacterial face wash. It cleanses and moisturizes the skin. Use a light weight sunscreen with SPF 30 to shield your skin against harmful sun rays.
Try this - To rejuvenate your tired skin after a stressful day, make a paste of one custard apple and blend it well. Now add 1 tablespoons sugar and ½ cup milk and a few drops of chamomile to the mixture and apply. It hydrates as well as deeply nourishes the skin, giving it back its lost sheen and radiance.
Recommended facial - AHA facial (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
Tip - Since the chances of infection increases during the rainy seasons, it's advisable to addvitamin C to your diet, which helps boost immunity.
